Austin Osborn, MD

Private Practice telepsychiatry in collierville, tn

About

Osborn Psychiatry is a telepsychiatry practice offering psychiatric diagnosis and psychopharmacological treatment to clients in Tennessee. Telemedicine appointments are conducted solely over Google Meet. As a solo private practice I offer a highly individualized and attentive focus on my clients’ difficulties, maintain an interest in psychotherapy, and pursue healing and restoration. I avoid excessive use of medication (polypharmacy), emphasize rational prescribing practices, and employ evidence-based medicine.

Dr. Austin Osborn is a Vanderbilt and University of Chicago-trained Christian psychiatrist with expertise in psychopharmacology and psychotherapy. He was initially board certified with the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and presently maintains certification with the National Board of Physicians and Surgeons (NBPAS).

Dr. Osborn received a Bachelor of Music degree from the Vanderbilt University Blair School of Music with a focus in music composition and clarinet performance. He attended medical school at the Vanderbilt School of Medicine before venturing to the University of Chicago to complete his psychiatry residency. While in Chicago he developed an interest in psychodynamic psychotherapy, psychopharmacology in refractory mood disorders, and developed expertise in managing psychiatric disorders with concurrent medical or neurological illnesses. He has worked on the inpatient units of Evanston Hospital in Evanston, IL; Memphis Mental Health Institute; and Western Mental Health Institute.

How It Works:

During the initial evaluation we will explore your reasons for seeking treatment including history of psychiatric symptoms, reaction to current sources of stress, medical history, social history, family history, substance use history, and any lingering issues from childhood. After a comprehensive psychiatric and medical evaluation and with review of any available imaging or laboratory results, we will discuss a diagnostic assessment and craft individualized treatment recommendations that may include laboratory testing, medications, psychotherapy, modification in level of activity, changes in diet, other medical testing, or referral to other specialists as appropriate.

During follow-up appointments we will review the response to treatment and refine the treatment plan. The 25-minute appointment permits time for assessing response to medication and lifestyle interventions, reviewing lab results, monitoring of progress in general and providing brief, supportive psychotherapy. The 50-minute session provides significantly more time for in-depth psychotherapy including exploration of conflicts, looking at interpersonal relations, and use of free association.

Why Don’t You Take Insurance:

In my effort to provide individualized care or what has been called “highly attentive medicine,” it has been necessary to remove the middleman. Insurance companies inject themselves into the doctor-patient relationship through denial of service, limitations placed on the type and frequency of treatment, and requests for confidential information such as diagnoses and treatment plans. Some clients would prefer that this information be kept confidential. The low reimbursement rates provided to physicians has also encouraged the rise of the “15-minute med check” appointment wherein there is barely enough time to greet each other and place a medication refill before the appointment concludes. These pressures detract from the pursuit of holistic psychiatry which must have sufficient time to explore psychological themes, analyze lifestyle and relational issues, and foster a healthy therapeutic alliance.

How Can I Afford Treatment

Some insurance companies (especially PPO policies) will provide reimbursement for out-of network services. You should call them prior to your first appointment using the Out-Of Network Worksheet to assist in your inquiry. You can also use your Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA) to pay for treatment. In some cases, if you itemize deductions on Schedule A of your taxes, you can deduct expenses you paid that year for medical care.

CAN YOU HELP ME FILE A CLAIM

Simplify filing your out-of-network claims by using Reimbursify. Use the superbill to file a claim using the Reimbursify app within minutes. The app will alert you when the claim has been received by your insurance company and then again when you should expect your reimbursement check in the mail (usually within 2-4 weeks). That’s it! There are no forms to fill out, nothing to fax or mail, and nothing to remember. If a claim gets rejected or denied, Reimbursify’s Rejection Resolution Pathway will help you easily navigate how to correct it. The app is free to download and for new users, the first claim you file with Reimbursify is free. After that, the cost to file a single claim (one visit with a provider) is $1.99.

What Makes You Different

I operate as an online, telepsychiatry practice and can treat patients located anywhere in Tennessee where I am licensed. I have a Christian worldview. I do not accept gifts, kickbacks, or lunches from pharmaceutical or device companies. Do not accept a bribe, for a bribe blinds the eyes of the wise and twists the words of the innocent. (Deut 16:19, NIV) I maintain an interest in evidence-based medicine, psychotherapy, avoidance of excessive use of medication, and rational prescribing practices. I can accept payment in cryptocurrency (e.g. Bitcoin, Ethereum) for those who wish to keep records of their treatment outside of traditional financial institutions. I am also interested in treatments such as non-invasive neuromodulation (CES or tDCS) and complementary psychiatry practices (L-methylfolate, N-acetylcysteine, light therapy, omega-3 fatty acids).

A NOTE ON CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES

Because of my concern for iatrogenic harm, that is prescribing medications whose harms outweigh their benefits, I do not prescribe benzodiazepines (e.g., Xanax, Ativan, Valium) or Z drugs (Ambien, Sonata, Lunesta) long-term. I am generally cautious when prescribing stimulants and cannot guarantee that they will be prescribed when requested.
